Man, whatever happened to the good ol' days, when the local papers would sit on stories until the press releases were churned out, while hungry blogs lapped up building permits and pre-release info to get the word out on local biz before it broke?
We've been salivating at the news that King's Sandwich Shop was going to reopen this week, with tasty burgers, 'cue, brats, hot dogs, milkshakes and more flowing out of the iconic Bull City structure at Foster and Geer.
And the soft opening last week (to which BCR was invited and -- full disclosure -- enjoyed a brat and sweet tea gratis) was a nice warm-up for a reboot of King's that's been long-awaited by downtowners and near-downtowners.
But we also planned to keep this week's public soft opening on the down low until mid-week, since the owners wanted a few days to ramp up before being besieged with customers.
Well, the Herald-Sun's got the story this morning, noting an "official" opening on Tuesday that follows recent quiet trials.
So the word's out. King's is back. So give it a try.
But, er, not all at once; unlike a TARDIS, it's the same small size on the outside as it is inside, and the owners and staff are still tweaking their processes for maximum efficiency.
And don't ding 'em for any slow service in this unexpectedly-early announcement period till they can get metaphorically get their grill cooking on full heat, 'kay?
Its great to see that corner alive again. I took a peek recently and the sunburst metal wall is really cool. T.J. said that the wall is original. I'll be there this week after Gyrotonics (on the other corner.) We've been waiting for the smell of grilled burgers and hotdogs!

Still shaking my head that Kevin used a Doctor Who reference to talk about a burger joint...

This is great news! We were just peering in the window on Saturday morning trying to figure out if they were open yet. Anyone know if they'll be open Saturdays? The H-S article just gives the hours 11-4.

According to TJ, Kings will be closed on Sundays and Mondays, and the initial hours of operation (11-4) are likely to expand within a few weeks to include breakfast and/or dinner if enough folks are interested.

UGH, I hate how so many places think Durhamites only want food during lunch hours. It's frustrating, but I obviously wish them success. Enough success to open for dinner as well.

I'm sure once they get their movements in that tiny kitchen choreographed, TJ and his crew will be more than happy to feed all of us three times a day.

TJ is planning on opening for breakfast in the future, but I think he just wants to get his feet wet first. Every time I've walked by, there have been people in line. I've only tried the hot dogs, fries & chocolate malt & I was not disappointed. The wait was no longer than it has been in the past & I will happily wait for my food to be prepared. If I wanted something pulled out from under a heat lamp, I'll go up the road to Mickey D's (I do like their QPs). I'm headed up today to get freshly squeezed lemonade. Yummmm. So happy TJ finally got it opened.

Kings is beyond delish. Good sloppy eats served by friendly faces and a side of special sauce. My life just got a tiny bit better thanks to their homemade slaw and extra chili. Done, thank you very much.
