Recent bond issues dating back to the mid-1990s have given Durhamites a chance to shake the rust and ruin off of a number of City parks, which had been some of the biggest losers of deferred maintenance over the years.
And even if some of the projects -- like Duke Park or Northgate Park -- didn't happen as quickly or with as much change as residents wanted or thought they'd been promised, the results have been noticeable in terms of the quality and amenities at a wide range of City parks.
Except, that is, for the signage out front -- most of which has been stuck in the 1970s with brown-tinted wood signs.
One P&R effort in recent years has been a refresh of that signage, with plans and designs brought before Council for approval. And now, Forest Hills is showing off that new look for park signage, as posted to the Forest Hills Neighborhood Association blog.
It's a much more modern look for park wayfinding -- though, again, that wouldn't be hard compared to the old signs. (Photo from the Durham Photos blog.)
Goregous. Good work, Durham

We are very happy with our phase one park renovations and look forward to new signage as well. It's the stream restoration that is giving us heartburn, with irrational easements scarfing up free play areas and plantings that block sight lines for safety. BUT, the city council and staff have responded with a great request to the state for modifications and with an offer of money to pay for a new survey, if needed. Stay tuned.

Sorry all, in previous post, I did not specify that I am talking about Northgate Park.

It is a nice looking sign, but good luck finding the pool seemingly advertised in the row of pictographs. Perhaps DPR is refering to the water-sprayer feature in the kids' playground.

While the new signs look great, I'm concerned about how well they will age, both physically and stylistically. Is this what all future DPS signage is going to be replaced with, once the money is found to do it?

There is a pool behind the clubhouse at Forest Hills Park, it's just closed a lot!

Call me old-fashioned, but I actually like the old signs!

Ern,
You're old-fashioned.

I think the pool is open between 2:35 and 3:15 on the third Tuesdays and Thursdays between July 4th and Labor Day. something like that.
