Food blogs are all the rage in Durham these days, but the always-dependable Joe has been writing about cooking and restaurants -- often with a Durham twist -- at Eat at Joe's since 2004.
And this weekend brought two bits of breaking news from Joe's place.
First, the Italian restaurant Pop's will be moving from its home at Richard Morgan's Peabody Place development to West Village, sometime in the coming months.
Joe tells us that the owners of Pop's -- who also founded Rue Cler in the city center district -- will be keeping the Pop's Backdoor pizza shop at its Peabody Place site for now, across from Parker & Otis' interior entrance.
The new restaurant will sit in the building that sits along the south side of Main St., just to the west of the Walker Warehouse that hosts the West End Wine Bar, the forthcoming Magpie boutique and proposed restaurant George, and the new Amtrak station. Joe reports seating for as many as 250 people along with private function rooms, the latter a mainstay of the current location, too.
BCR had heard over a year ago that the West Village development was working to lure Pop's out of its current site, a wooing that it seems has now become successful.
Meanwhile, the Charlie and Diana Deal-helmed restaurant Dos Perros will be adding its long-planned breakfast menu starting Monday morning at 7:30.
Early morning eats run until 10:30am weekdays only. Eggs and omelets, pancakes (with dulce de leche syrup or maple syrup), and breakfast burritos will be among the items served.
Pop's has always had my favorite pizza in Durham, and I feel like the Backdoor is the best delivery of any sort in the area (with prices that are somehow cheaper than chains).
I'd also heard the rumblings of Pop's moving, and I think it's probably for the better, even though I really like their current space in Peabody. Even though it's a nice building, it's not as visible as the stuff on Main, so I doubt they get a lot of casual walk-in business at their current location.
The question I have is - why leave the backdoor where it is? Kinda makes me wonder if they're going to expand the backdoor into a sit-down restaurant all its own? Or perhaps they have a lot of private events, and they just hope to reserve that space for them?

This is great news! And a smart business move. I absolutely think though that the backdoor moving would be the most beneficial move of all (to Pops and customers). That is the type of things where location is more important than anything...so people leaving the bars every night would get pizza from the backdoor if it was visible on main st. Just look at how well OnlyBurger does on the weekends...
And maybe they should start serving individual slices, or at least pizzas small enough for one person that are comparable prices to getting food for one.

I'm hoping Pops Backdoor will start staying open later than 10...hint hint :)
