@ Kevin

I made the point in the essay

http://www.thedurhamnews.com/news/story/199425.html

that service on appointed boards should not be the only standard for endorsements--and by implication elections. But perhaps I did not make the point clear enough that service on these boards SomeTimes grooms citizens for handling the rough and tumble of Durham politics without losing their cool or alienating future allies over a single disagreement.

Bottom line: service on the boards with a culturally and ideologically diverse membership isn't a be-all, end-all by any means. It's filter that active citizen/leaders often use to find new leaders who can be successful while taking the heat. Former Mayor Gulley, being an example that I offered.

Also, as Pastor Williams cc'd to a large number of citizens and media his message to me and you've shared it here, I thought it reasonable to include my reply:

Pastor Williams,

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. Was out of town for the weekend for work.

I also apologize for including an inaccurate quote from a citizen about your activity on appointed boards.

In addition, however, I want to respond to your characterization about PA being "elitist." I don't think that is fair or accurate.

The People's Alliance endorsement meetings are more open and democratic than the endorsement meetings of either the Friends of Durham or the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People.

And it's probably not news to anyone who's spent time in Durham that PA was a leader in campaigns that helped working people such as the Living Wage campaigns (which now help about 1000 Durham workers have wages of about $10--$11 an hour, instead of $6 or $7) and getting the NCDOT for the first time to pay to move an entire neighborhood--Crest St.--out of the way of the Durham Freeway.

As to your choice of indulging in name calling against a group that chose not to endorse you, I guess all I can say is that perhaps you missed the main message of my essay.

Thank you for contacting me and good luck with your campaign.
