It's tough not to kick off a wrap-up of the weekend fun to come without mentioning the fun happening right now at West End Wine Bar, which is celebrating its grand opening tonight with 25+ patrons, some (but not all) friends of the business in Chapel Hill, others just passersby who dropped by for a chance to check out the place in action.
The coffee and wine half of the space on the northern end has most of the action, with the tiny southern space through darkened doors giving access to liquors, beers, and a couple of video game machines.
But don't rest at checking out new establishments. It's an embarrassment of riches in Durham this weekend.
Tonight, be sure to check out Tacomentary: The Durham Taco Story; presented by our friends Andrew and Sarah of Carpe Durham, it's an 18-minute look at Durham's taco scene, complete with a taco truck, all outside The Pinhook downtown from 6-9pm.
Also starting this evening at Golden Belt is the seventh annual MOMart Show, an exhibition and sale of local and regional artists' work. All net proceeds go to the terrific local charity Genesis Home. A preview event runs until 10pm tonight (tickets $25 for 12 and over; students $15), with open houses 9am-4pm Saturday and 12pm-4pm Sunday.
Moving into this weekend, it's time for the 13th annual Preservation Durham Old Durham Tour, which sets its sights on Morehead Hill this Saturday. See houses (complete and under renovation) in one of Durham's first and most elite suburbs, a place being rescued from disrepair after the Durham Freeway ignominiously shoved its way through. The event runs 10am to 6pm; tickets are $20, and if you didn't buy them in advance, you can purchase them at the PD kiosk in Orchard Park (corner of Duke and Cobb) tomorrow. Free parking is available behind the BCBS/Duke Physician Assistant building in the 800 block of S. Duke.
The Central Park School for Children's annual Strawberry Festival is set for tomorrow (rain or shine -- though the former looks likely) at Old North Durham Park. As the N&O pointed out this week, the school's used its $125,000 from past festival proceeds (and a city matching grant) to add new playground equipment to the park, which abuts the charter school and which gets both scholastic and community use. (If only DPS and Durham Parks & Rec could find a way to do the same....) There's free admission, and you pay for kid-themed (and -planned) activities and foods -- many strawberry themed, naturally -- once you're inside.
Also, it's the Durham Farmers' Market as usual this weekend -- but the Saturday retail draw (8am to noon, Durham Central Park) goes back to twice-weekly starting this Wed., May 6, when the mid-week seasonal market starts back up (3:30pm-6:30pm). Look for a celebration of the market's tenth anniversary later this month.
Some time ago, I really needed to buy a good house for my organization but I did not have enough cash and could not buy something. Thank God my mother proposed to try to take the loan from reliable creditors. Thus, I did that and was happy with my auto loan.
