Not one but two nice tributes to the Bull City crossed the BCR inbox on Tuesday.
First up: a terrific Durham visitor's guide, written by local photographer and Cleveland-Holloway resident Jessie Gladin-Kramer (web site) for the national blog Design*Sponge.
Besides featuring some of the best of Durham, from bars to restaurants to retail, Gladin-Kramer's photography provides a stunning look at Durham's architecture and people, capturing what one of the Design*Sponge commenters calls "the Edward Hopper-like magic hour glow we get here at dusk."
Check out some of her work that didn't make it to Design*Sponge over at Gladin-Kramer's blog, Umbrella Love.
Also worth a look, or make that a listen: this semester's Durham Neighborhood College class's end-of-program project asked teams to work on "perceptions of Durham" -- leading the group that included WXDU DJ Sarah Ovenall (blog) to produce a nine-plus minute audio documentary, Why Do I Like Living in Durham?
Listen to or download the MP3 version of the audio doc from Ovenall's web site, or visit Phil Marsosudiro's blog The Archer Pelican for this interview with Ovenall on the audio documentary -- including a look at how it was received, and what pieces didn't quite make it into the program.
Incidentally, Phil shares what is my favorite quote in the entire piece:
I think this is the most honest city I've ever hung out in. There's just no pretense here. There's stupidity, sure. Arrogance, pride, and all of these other things, but no one tries to pretend to be what they're not. Everyone's proud of who they are, or they just are what they are. And I love it, love Durham. I can't imagine living anywhere else.
Great post! Thanks for the share!
