Proving that there's no end of fun to living in urban neighborhoods, or to subscribing to urban neighborhood listservs. From the Watts-Hillandale list:
Just thought I should let folks know that we were accosted today, at
home, by an older white couple accusing us of running a prostitution
ring from our home. The woman rang the doorbell and was *very*
aggressive, yelling at my husband "let me in!" We did not let her in,
but she was insistent that "a black boy" told her that we had
prostitutes in the house and that the man w/her (her husband?) had
"been there." She threatened to call the police, which I welcomed, and
eventually, I think after seeing our small kids peering out at her,
gave up and drove away in her white, mid-sized late model American car.
It was mostly just incredibly bizarre, but was also off-putting and
just thought I'd let folks know, in case she/they come to your house
accusing you of running the WHH brothel.
Of course, as we've learned in recent months, as long as it's not a satanic sex ring you're accused of housing in Watts-Hillandale, you have nothing to fear from the police or the mass media. Apparently unsubstantiated accusations of brothelism are more likely to come from crazy old white ladies, though.
Not to mention the post on the same listserv this morning:
"When I came home from Meeting this morning, I found two strips of raw bacon on my dining room floor. It's a very good guess that my younger cat brought them in. They look uneaten. I'm hoping that's the case.
If you put carry-off-able food outside, would you please put it in a cat-proof container?
Much appreciated."

A few random thoughts generated at our house by the above:
--Brothels and bacon? That's it, crime is out of control here. I'm listing the house for sale.
--"Leave the Bacon and Run"--wasn't that an early Woody Allen movie?
--at least SOMEONE is bringing home the bacon in this economy!
