The turkey doesn't get here until tomorrow, but the fish are served here daily. Well, weekdaily at least. Excepting holidays, natch.
- A 1960 Duke grad who's currently a guest lecturer in law at the southeast's finest law school (not that I'm biased) has been appointed to fill Joe Biden's seat in the Senate. Ted Kaufman, a longtime Biden aide, will hold the seat until a special election in 2010 and has signaled he is not intending to stand for election that year. (We're betting Duke officials are busily pencilling in "remember the NIH!" and "keep funding basic sciences!" in their holiday cards to the Kaufman household.) (H-S)
- VA secretary James Peake spoke in Durham yesterday, praising the VA medical center here in the Bull City and its long-standing partnership with Duke; he noted the facility's high volume and Duke relationship would likely protect the center from federal cutbacks, and foreshadowed the facility's growth to support more outpatient care. (H-S)
- If the crazies are taking over the comments, you know one thing: it's Duke LAX day in the papers! This time, it's the Herald-Sun reporting that Duke has filed suit against one of its insurers for failing to reimburse the university for a settlement reached this June with a number of players over the 2006 hullabaloo. (H-S)
While it is great that Ted Kaufman will join the Senate from Delaware, and he must surely be a credit to Duke Law, unfortunately that Law School also has the ignominious distinction of granting a degree to Richard Nixon-- and that black mark may forever damage its reputation, no matter its future accolades!
