Kudos for the City's Eastway Village project, a significant redevelopment of the old Barnes Avenue corridor and now of the one-time Few Gardens low-income housing project site, where condos and attractive single-family homes are replacing one fo the most blighted parts of the Bull City.
The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency recently announced its housing awards for the year, and Eastway Village was picked for the outstanding home ownership development in the state.
The 19th annual agency awards are intended to recognize "the most innovative and effective affordable housing in the state."
Community Development director Mike Barros thanked Wanda Page, ex-city manager Patrick Baker, and staff from a range of departments, including Real Estate, Legal and NIS, who made it a success. Barros also recognized Bill Bell, calling him "the sparkplug who got this project done," and noting the mayor would drive by on his way to work and provide feedback, ideas and concerns to the project team.
"It provides a quality of life improvement in North-East Central Durham, specifically for those persons who chose to make it their home," Bell said. "We know there's been a great sense of pride for them, as well as the City of Durham."
The mayor added that all of the 16 single-family homes and all but two of the 15 condos in Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the project have been sold to homeowners. "We're starting the third phase, which will complete that development," Bell said.
