Sorry for the missed Fishwrap Report on Friday. The "day job" started for me at 5am Friday and -- save for a 3 hour nap and couple hours' break -- continued until 10am Saturday morning. Here's a look at some of the key weekend and Monday stories in the local pressers:
- The City Council is weighing whether to strike bike lanes from the upcoming widening of the southern portion of Fayetteville Rd., since that stretch parallels the American Tobacco Trail. Keeping the lanes could add several million dollars to the $23 million city-funded effort. Backers of the lanes, including Councilman Mike Woodard and the City's bike/ped commission, point out that the ATT is more recreational while on-street lanes would better suit commuters. (H-S)
- In the least-surprising news of this political season, the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People has voted to oppose the prepared foods tax. (H-S, Indy)
- County government is considering $500 bonuses to keep key social services staff working, in the face of 60% staff turnover in the past two years. (N&O TDN)
- RDU hosted an open house for the new Terminal 2 on Saturday. All the papers and TV stations covered the event; best chance for an extended peek is the streaming video on WRAL's site.
- Ex-Bull David Price pulled out a win in the Tampa Bay Rays' crucial American League Championship Series game 2 against the Boston Red Sox, while DBAP alums B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria provided key hits in the win. (N&O)
