All the bulldozer work taking place on the site of American Tobacco Phase III these days appears to be reversing Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi."
Capitol Broadcasting is tearing up a one-time parking lot, un-paving it and putting a tiny bit o' paradise back in.
The TV station, baseball, real estate and dance-dance-revolution conglomerate filed a site plan with City/County Planning last week for what's termed "American Tobacco Phase 3A Intermediate-Green Space" -- a 2-acre parcel between the Durham Performing Arts Center and the main Ambacco complex that will become open green space.
For the time being, that is. With Capitol's relationship with Stuever Bros. Eccles & Rouse reportedly so cold it would make liquid nitrogen shiver, and given the general frostiness of the real estate and development markets, the condo/apartment and retail development slated to fill this part of American Tobacco is on hold for now.
But the green space will make a nicer thing to look at than the old Bulls parking and satellite dish complex did.
I had no idea they were putting in some green space there. I just assumed they were taking out that concrete wall to put in more parking. This is really good news. There aren't enough green spaces here...
