Third Friday adds Golden Belt vibe...

With warmer summer weather here at hand, Third Friday is alive tonight at a wide range of venues.

The event, which officially runs from 5-9 pm, includes spaces ranging from Merge Records' offices on E. Chapel Hill St. to the Bull City Arts Collaborative on Foster all the way to Joe van Gogh's coffeeshop on Broad. (See the full list of sites after the jump below.)

One new addition to the Third Friday list is Golden Belt, whose artist studios will be "officially" open for the first time to the public from 6-9pm tonight as part of the monthly Durham downtown arts happening.

As with last month's sneak-peek to young friends of the Nasher, tonight's event at Golden Belt will allow visitors to stroll through the thirty-plus artist studios, meet with artists, and view and purchase their work.

ROOM 100, the contemporary art gallery in Golden Belt, continues its initial show curated by the Branch Gallery.

Town of Mirrors: The Collages of Robert Pollard
    6-8

Merge will be hosting Town of Mirrors, a collection of collages by Robert Pollard. Town of Mirrors is the inaugural art show in our downtown Durham office on August 15th.

The inspiration behind the art show is the forthcoming coffee-table book entitled, Town of Mirrors which will be released by Fantagraphics on August 6, 2008. Town of Mirrors collects the very best of Pollard’s visual art and lyrics/poetry. Featuring over 180 of Pollard’s favorite collages, hand-picked by the artist, as well as over a dozen new collages produced exclusively for this book, the first comprehensive collection of Pollard’s visual art ever released. The Durham show will include collages from the book as well as newer pieces. Original artwork and copies of the book will be available for purchase.

In addition to being a revered songwriter and recording artist, Pollard is a gifted and prolific visual artist, working mostly in the medium of collage. His work has been exhibited at Michael Imperioli’s Studio Dante in New York and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He has created the covers to almost every Guided By Voices record and countless other Pollard-related releases.

Robert Pollard released four records on Merge, the latest of which, Coast to Coast Carpet of Love and Standard Gargoyle Decisions, were released in October 2007. Mr. Pollard most recently released Robert Pollard is Off to Business on his own Guided By Voices, Inc. label, and will be touring this summer and in early fall.

Was really surprised at what i saw. Not was I expected at all. Really not in the best part of town. maybe that will change as progress moves in. Only a few number of the booths were occupied. this is going to be an interesting endeavor
