The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHCMPO) will hold a public hearing tonight on their draft metropolitan transportation improvement program (MTIP). The MTIP lists the metro area's priorities for transportation funding over a seven year period, including road, train and bike/ped projects.
The MPO has released a draft version of the report at their web site. Tonight's public hearing will be held at 7pm on the second floor committee room of City Hall.
Comments on the MTIP are a great way to provide input on projects like the East End Connector -- which, as the document notes, has stretched out into a 2014 start date instead of 2012 and is still $66.5 million short of funding.
Other project priorities listed in the MTIP -- most also lacking clear funding -- include six-laning I-40 from US 15-501 to I-85 in Orange County; widening I-85 through Orange County; corridor improvements to US 15-501 between Durham and Chapel Hill; improvements to US 70 between Lynn Rd and the Northern Durham Parkway; and widening I-85 from US 70 to Red Mill Rd. in northeastern Durham County.
As someone who goes to work from Durham to Hillsborough every morning, I see no need to widen I-85 in Orange county. I would like to see a wider shoulder off exit 170.
