Still shopping for gifts this holiday season? Looking for something that tells people you care about Durham -- and about supporting Durham's youth?
If so, you may want to check out the new online store from SeeSaw Studio, which recently relocated from their Geer St. facility to the Hayti Heritage Center. SeeSaw is a non-profit that works to provide job and life skills to at-risk youth by inspiring them to design t-shirts, tote bags, and other goods that are then sold to the general public. You may have seen some of their shirts lining the walls at Joe Van Gogh's, or on sale at the Durham Art Walk.
As SeeSaw points out on its web site, the program can sponsor one entry-level youth designer at SeeSaw for a year for $1,200. That same $1,200 would pay for about one week of services for a young person housed in Durham County's juvenile detention facilities. (Proving yet again that it's both more humane and more cost-effective to steer kids in the right direction than to have to try to change their course later.)
You can now purchase SeeSaw goods directly from their online store, just in time for holiday shopping. Check it out for that Durham fan on your gift list.

What a great idea - thanks for posting this, Kevin!
Does anyone know who founded or is behind this program? At CenterFest, they always have really great people manning their display.

Ooo, thanks for the heads up. When this came through the listserv, the t-shirts weren't up yet. Love the Triangle t-shirt. Love that Durham is in the "right" angle. :p
