Next time folks in the City of Durham tell you that city government takes neighborhood traffic calming seriously, you can tell them the Solid Waste Department doesn't seem to:
So I decided to play self-appointed traffic cop this afternoon, and for 15 minutes, I stood near the crest of North Duke St., just before Englewood. Waiting for traffic to fly by.
The good news was that most vehicles were at, or within a couple of miles of, the speed limit. The biggest offender during the time I was there? A truck belonging to the City of Durham, Solid Waste Department. The automated radar gun caught 'em doing 44, in a 35. At the exact point that a woman was horrifically killed less than a week before.
Memo to City Hall Plaza: whoever was driving the city vehicle with tag number 79799-S at 1:20pm on Saturday, Jan. 20, needs to get some remedial lessons in driving. Maybe remedial public relations while they're at it.
